Grenoble city in central France has been one of LOTUS case study sites, where we focused specifically on thermal retrofit projects in collective housing estates, carried out by Grenoble-Alpes Metropolitan public authority since 2010 (“MurMur I” project: 2010-2014, “MurMur II” project: 2016-2020). Since the publication of the Climate-Air-Energy Plan in July 2020, Grenoble has been working towards a -50 % greenhouse emission reduction, and a -40 % energy consumption reduction by 2050 (compared against 2005 figures).
Early in 2022, Grenoble was designated the European Green Capital for the ongoing year, with over 200 events organised all year round, and a specific theme every month: “mobility” in September, followed by “agriculture” in October and “waste” in November. The Green Capital year is an occasion for Grenoble to strengthen the ties between local authorities, businesses, NGOs, and inhabitants of the metropolitan area in order to accelerate the local energy transition, and hopefully to steer its social inclusiveness.
